Get help quickly
Go to A&E or call the out-of-hours GP service. Deep wounds may need stitches and a check for tendon or nerve damage. Keep the wound covered with a clean dressing.
Do this
• Clean the wound carefully with clean water
• Cover the wound with a sterile dressing
• Go to A&E or the out-of-hours GP service
• Check tetanus vaccination status
• Keep the injured body part raised if you can
Warning signs
• The wound goes deeper than the skin (visible fat or muscle)
• Numbness or tingling around the wound
• A wound to the hand, wrist or foot
• A wound from a dirty or rusty object
