Dehydration
Get help quickly
Contact your GP or the out-of-hours GP service. Give oral rehydration solution (ORS) straight away in small frequent sips and do not leave the person alone. Prolonged fluid loss needs professional assessment.
Do this
• Start ORS (oral rehydration solution) immediately
• Give a small sip every 5 minutes, not too much at once
• Let the person rest and do not leave them alone
• Call the out-of-hours GP service for advice
• Check consciousness and urine output every hour
Warning signs
• Confusion or sudden deterioration
• Palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
• No urine passed despite drinking
• Persistent vomiting that makes drinking impossible
