battery and display issues under asahi
I had modified my configuration on the macbook to launch kmscon at startup as a part of hiding boot-time messages.
The first attempt failed to launch Wayland, but the terminal was beautiful and supported nice things like resizing the display on the fly.
After that was fixed, things seemed good, but the GUI felt a little laggy.
After a few days I realized my battery was dying far too quickly. So I have commented out the KMSCon section and the battery is a little better.
Preserving that section here:
T282828
T8b949e#services.kmscon =
T8b949e#{
T8b949e# enable = true;
T8b949e# hwRender = true;
T8b949e# extraConfig =
T8b949e# ''
T8b949e# font-name=MesloLGS NF
T8b949e# font-size=14
T8b949e# '';
T8b949e#};
Several boots later it was acting a little strange with regard to graphics again. Not sure KMSCon had anything to do with the issue.
Reverting that didn't seem to help. The GUI is still laggy. Maybe it's a driver issue. Kitty CPU usage is high, as well. Battery life is rather terrible.
Hyprland and kitty were sitting at high CPU use while idle, so I'm going to kill them both and see how KMSCon does.
KMSCon is doing 5-6% CPU usage just showing btop output :-(
I commented out the console and KMSCon stuff and the problem persists.
As a workaround, I've installed sway and foot. They idle very low. I cannot play any videos, without spiking the CPU, though.
T383838glxinfo -B shows llvmpipe as the render string. I thought it said Mac something in the past?
This problem is unresolved, but at least I can minimize the battery drain by avoiding 3d and gui browsers.
I need to circle back to this and investigate further.
