Most of the visual elements are controlled by variables in the configuration for default values and are toggleable. This is also used to implement a zen mode.

To make my UI look more like the TRS 80 I have listchars turned on, it's that triangle at the end of the line, it points to the left to show the edge, or it points to the right to show that there is more stuff when line wrap is turned off.

These also make it possible to see tabs vs spaces and trailing whitespace.
