Epictetus - Short Works - ¶1 what is under control
From Short Works ¶1:
│ In our power are opinion (ὑπόληψις), movement towards a thing (ὁρμή), desire,
│ aversion (ἔκκλισις, turning from a thing); and in a word, whatever are our
│ own acts: not in our power are the body, property, reputation, offices
│ (magisterial power), and in a word, whatever are not our own acts.
In our power are our actions, opinions, desires, and aversions. Not within our power is everything else, including our own body.
As an aside; I'm curious about this in a word expression that is used throughout the work. I wonder if this is an archaic English term chosen for the translation or is more of a literal translation of the original greek.
