Epictetus - Short Works - ¶1 what is not under control
From Short Works:
│ And the things in our power are by nature free, not subject to restraint nor
│ hindrance: but the things not in our power are weak, slavish, subject to
│ restraint, in the power of others.
The things in our power are free in terms of restraint or being hindered by others.
I'm not sure about the weak, slavish description. Are these things undesirable? Or more generically just fettered in a sense that makes them not free. But then why the description of weak? Is that implying they are a weakness or is it implying they have little strengh over oneself in that their effects can be warded off?
