Comments on AI (Yes that again)
I want to express some thoughts about the boom, bubble, and soon-to-be-bust trajectory of AI. I am not saying AI will bust and go away, but it will expand, explode, and contract back into something more usable. I personally use AI when it makes sense, mostly as a tool that helps me be more productive. As someone on the autism spectrum, I find AI to be particularly helpful in certain situations – for example, it aids me in communicating with others by providing a framework for coherent conversation, and has been instrumental in organizing my thoughts into something comprehensible to those around me.
When I discovered that I am autistic, it helped explain many of the challenges I've faced throughout my life. One of the biggest issues I've struggled with is maintaining and forming relationships, particularly with people who are consistently volatile and unreliable. For me, small talk has always seemed like a pointless exercise in pretending to be something I'm not. On the other hand, communication that conveys useful information is where I find value.
Machines are predictable; if a mistake occurs, it's often because of an error on my part. Despite this, the idea of building conscious entities like Data from Star Trek has always fascinated me, so I've used AI to explore its potential benefits in my life. While there have been successes when used responsibly, I've also noticed times when I resist relying solely on AI.
My main concern is that AI can inadvertently turn a machine back into an unpredictable human entity prone to errors. When I lose trust in someone or something's output, I feel the need to distance myself from them. What saddens me most is watching machines – which I've grown comfortable with – become less trustworthy and more like humans.
Eventually, avoiding AI will be like trying to avoid taxes: it won't happen, no matter how hard you try. However, I believe that leveraging AI as a tool responsibly can help amplify your efforts and unlock capabilities you may not have had before. Just don't view AI as a replacement for humans; currently, it's not a set-it-and-forget-it solution that you can trust 100 percent.
