There has already been a lot of commentary about the leaking of the source of Claude Code, but to cut to the chase I think there are a couple of takeaways.

First, it's obvious that whoever produced this software is a grifter who is selling very expensive bridges to gullible people who are being made fools out of. It's like the emperor's new clothes, but worse because it's not just one mark being conned. There's the similarity of a lot of people having concerns but downplaying them or being afraid to point them out for fear of career preservation. In some situations standing out from the crowd of AI bros puts you higher on the list of employees to be fired.

Second, I hope this is a turning point in the software industry. I have been hoping that 2026 will be the year when the generative AI thing deflates. This is an event which shows behind the curtain, and you can see that whatever is there is not what was advertised.

And you can bleat, complain, and cry into your beer about how rubbish code existed in the past. Yes it did, but there is a difference between ineptly constructed code made by people straight out of college and utter garbage. And in the past through many battles we learned at least in approximate terms what well engineered source code should look like and how it should behave, be tested, etc. The source code is always the real truth of the matter, warts and all, and when you can clearly see that the truth of the matter is that you're being scammed then this may be an aha moment.
