The History of the Cypherpunks

The Cypherpunks were (and still are) a loosely organized movement of activists, cryptographers, hackers, and programmers who, since the early 1990s, have advocated for privacy, strong encryption, and digital self-determination. Their central goal: to protect privacy in the digital age through mathematics and code - not through mere trust in institutions.

The Beginnings in the 1990s

The movement emerged in 1992 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its founders included Eric Hughes, Timothy C. May, and John Gilmore. An email mailing list quickly became the central hub for discussions about cryptography, surveillance, digital identity, and government control.
In 1993, Eric Hughes published the famous "A Cypherpunk's Manifesto", in which he wrote:

"Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age."

The core message: Those who want freedom must secure privacy through strong, publicly available encryption.

Cryptography as a Political Tool

In the 1990s, strong encryption in the United States was still subject to export restrictions and was at times treated like military-grade munitions. Cypherpunks actively opposed these limitations. They distributed encryption software such as PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) and developed anonymous communication systems.

Their motto was:

"Cypherpunks write code."

This meant that instead of merely engaging in political debate, they built practical technical solutions, including:

Digital Currencies and the Road to Bitcoin

Many of the concepts that later enabled cryptocurrencies were discussed within the Cypherpunk movement. These included:
