Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac (1619–1655) was a French novelist, playwright, and soldier whose imaginative writings made him a pioneer of science fiction and philosophical satire. Best known today as the inspiration for Edmond Rostand's play Cyrano de Bergerac, he was in fact an accomplished author in his own right. His works, including The Other World: The States and Empires of the Moon and The States and Empires of the Sun, used fantastical voyages to explore science, religion, and society with remarkable originality. Though little appreciated during his lifetime, Cyrano is now recognized as one of the most inventive writers of seventeenth-century French literature.
