La madre
The mother

Set in a small Sardinian village, the novel follows Paolo, a young Catholic priest, and his widowed mother, Maria Maddalena. She has devoted her life to supporting her son's vocation and sees his priesthood as the fulfillment of her deepest hopes. When Paolo falls in love with Agnese, his mother realizes that he is struggling between his religious vows and his human desires. Fearful that he will abandon the priesthood and lose his faith, she desperately tries to prevent the relationship from developing.
