Verner von Heidenstam (1859–1940) was a Swedish poet, novelist, and essayist who became one of the leading figures of the Swedish literary renaissance at the end of the nineteenth century. Rejecting the realism of his contemporaries, he championed a more romantic and national style in works such as Endymion, Karolinerna (The Charles Men), and Folkungaträdet (The Tree of the Folkungs), celebrating Swedish history, heroism, and cultural identity. Equally admired for his lyric poetry, Heidenstam exerted a lasting influence on Scandinavian literature. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1916 in recognition of his significance as the foremost representative of a new era in Swedish literature.
