A Memory Called Empire
The novel follows Mahit Dzmare, the newly appointed ambassador from the small, independent Lsel Station to the powerful Teixcalaanli Empire. Upon arriving in the imperial capital, she discovers that her predecessor has died under suspicious circumstances. Mahit must investigate the mystery while navigating the empire's intricate political intrigues and avoiding efforts to annex her homeland. At the same time, she relies on an imago-machine, a device that preserves the memories and personalities of previous generations, though the one she carries has become damaged, leaving her without the guidance she expected.
