Martin Andersen Nexø was a Danish writer. He was a socialist throughout his life and during the Second World War moved to the Soviet Union, and afterwards to Dresden in East Germany. His books deal with extreme poverty and social injustice around 1900, and both 'Pelle Erobreren' and 'Ditte Menneskebarn' were made into film, with 'Pelle Erobreren' winning an Oscar in 1989.
