Imago
In 1906, the Swiss writer Carl Spitteler published his novel Imago, which enjoyed considerable success within the emerging psychoanalytic community. The plot of the novel is simple: Viktor, a young poet, decides to travel to the city of X to meet Theuda, the love of his life. However, after only a few pages we begin to wonder who this enigmatic woman is: she is happily married to Director Wyss and does not seem to know the bewildered Viktor at all. After this grave disillusionment, a series of highly unusual characters appear in the pages of this beautiful novel: the Strict Lady, capable of directing the protagonist’s actions to the point of madness; Pseuda, the false Theuda, who swears again and again that she has never seen this man in her life; and finally Imago, “guilty” of all the misfortunes that befall Viktor and strangely related to the Strict Lady. The mixture of fantasy and reality, as well as the theme of woman as both inspirer and destroyer, fascinated another eminent Swiss figure, Carl Gustav Jung, who developed his notion of the imago after reading this novel.
