Ida Elisabeth
Ida Elisabeth is still just a young girl when she is seduced by Frithjof, who is her own age. She loses her virginity to him in a hayloft, and in the early years of the twentieth century this is not considered respectable for a woman. Their secret affair is accidentally discovered by the town doctor, and when Frithjof subsequently proposes to Ida, she feels compelled to accept in order to preserve her honour. Frithjof soon proves to be both lazy and irresponsible. He is an alcoholic who does nothing to earn a living. As a result, Ida must not only care for the household and the three children they eventually have, but also support the family financially by working as a seamstress. After many years of dutiful toil, she falls in love with the lawyer Trygsve Toksvold, putting her strong moral principles to the test. Can she follow her own heart without hurting her children?
