Le silence de la mer
Silence de la mer
In occupied France, a German officer is billeted in the house of an old man and his niece. Every evening, courteous and cultured, Werner von Ebrennac — a former composer who dreams of a Franco-German brotherhood — talks to them by the fire. And every evening, the uncle and his niece answer with total, deliberate silence: their mute refusal is their resistance. Written in 1941 and printed clandestinely as the first book of the Éditions de Minuit, this brief, austere novella became the very emblem of French mental resistance — a study in dignity, delusion, and the moment when a decent man finally sees what his nation has become, told with exemplary sobriety by one of the Occupation's bravest voices.
