Le Sphinx des glaces


The novel is a sequel to Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1838). Verne imagines what happened after the mysterious ending of Poe's novel. The story is narrated by Jeorling, an American engineer traveling in the Falkland Islands. He joins an expedition aboard the Halbrane in search of survivors from Arthur Gordon Pym's expedition. The voyage takes the crew deep into the Antarctic, where they encounter extraordinary natural phenomena and ultimately discover the explanation for the enigmatic white figure and magnetic mysteries described in Poe's novel.
