Les Indes noires
The novel is set in Scotland, where the old Aberfoyle coal mine has been abandoned after being declared exhausted. Years later, the former mine manager, Simon Ford, believes that a vast new coal seam remains undiscovered beneath the old workings. His son Harry Ford, engineer James Starr, and others explore the underground passages and eventually discover an immense hidden coalfield. Around it, they establish Coal City, a thriving underground community illuminated by electric lighting.
