AEW Dynamite’s increasingly lengthy broadcasts are reportedly becoming a source of frustration for some people working within the company.

In recent weeks, several episodes of Dynamite have gone beyond the show’s scheduled two-hour window, with some broadcasts reportedly extending by as much as 30 minutes. While extra television time may sound like a positive for wrestling fans, a new report suggests the lengthy overruns are not universally welcomed backstage.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer (https://www.f4wonline.com/) Live, Bryan Alvarez said he has spoken with people in AEW who have questioned why Dynamite continues to run so far beyond its scheduled finish.

“Guys, you realize I talked to people in AEW. Nobody likes this overrun. The people there are like, ‘Why is this show going so long? I left and got home, and the show was still going.’”

Alvarez pushed back against the idea that complaints about the extended broadcasts are simply criticism coming from those outside AEW. According to him, there are people within the promotion who are equally puzzled by the situation.

“This is not something where, ‘Oh, everybody there is all excited about it, and we’re the bad guys.’ Like, nobody is in favor of this except the real hardcores,” he said.

Another issue raised was whether AEW is actually benefiting financially from keeping Dynamite on the air beyond its usual two-hour slot. Alvarez claimed Tony Khan and AEW are not receiving additional payment for the extra television time, while also arguing that some of the show’s biggest developments are taking place after a portion of the audience has already tuned out.

“He’s [Khan] not getting anything out of this. He’s not getting paid for the overruns. I could tell you that for a fact. He’s losing viewers. He’s shooting his big angles in front of the smallest audience. Like, what are we doing?”

The discussion comes amid continued attention surrounding Dynamite’s television audience. The August 12 episode reportedly averaged 658,000 viewers, representing a five percent decline compared with the previous week’s Grand Slam Mexico broadcast.

Alvarez added that he has attempted to find out why the overruns have become such a regular feature of Dynamite, but claimed he has yet to receive a clear explanation.

“And I ask people, I’m like, ‘Can anyone explain to me?’ Like, ‘No, no one knows. He just keeps going,’” Alvarez said.

With Dynamite regularly stretching beyond its advertised finishing time, it remains to be seen whether AEW will continue allowing lengthy overruns or eventually move toward a more consistent two-hour format.
