[[Tue,02:51] <B> Howdy
[[Tue,03:33] <B> Where is everyone logging on from?
[[Tue,04:44] <josef> @B from Indonesia
[[Tue,05:31] <B> Nice! Are you one of the only people on reticulum out there? Or is it decent in popularity
[[Tue,06:15] <pete> good morning from germany
[[Tue,06:16] <B> Good morning! About to head to bed here in the US
[[Tue,06:17] <B> Hope its a good day out there
[[Tue,06:17] <pete> nice, sleep well! :)
[[Tue,06:19] <pete> just discovered the site browsing function in the Columbia App, cool! :)
[[Tue,06:23] <josef> @B there are a few on the rmap abaout 6 and only 2 that I have contact with them.
[[Tue,07:05] <pete> @josef that's a good start, we are just starting to build a network in our city
[[Tue,07:34] <Guest> @pete can you share your reasons for the network?
[[Tue,07:43] <josef> @pete Nice.. I starting with reti just 2 months ago, and its interesting.
[[Tue,07:44] <josef> But somehow back inmy mind I thought the posibility connecting to old pc's or the good old homecomputer like the c64 or amiga.
[[Tue,07:46] <josef> I saw on ytube somehere that somebody made a cartrigde for using meshtastic for the c64.
[[Tue,07:52] <josef> So I believe it mind be posible with reti
[[Tue,08:34] <pete> @josef: our reasons for wanting to use reticulum is explained really well in the Zen of Reticulum (https://reticulum.network/manual/zen.html).
[[Tue,08:36] <pete> I meant to answer @guest sorry :)
[[Tue,08:42] <Guest> I would like to know the story of everyone for inspiration why and how to use it. I have read the Zen.
[[Tue,08:50] <pete> @gurst: main reason is to have an alternative network that does not allow surveillance, control etc. The way things are developing in many countries (authoritarianism) necessitates an alternative free comms network.
[[Tue,09:51] <welo> the irony about an alternative network is that we'll only start using it when we are forced to
[[Tue,09:52] <welo> maybe that's not really irony but human nature, but here will stay niche as long as the normal internet is just about bareable enough
[[Tue,09:53] <welo> this place is more a backup unless you really need to send information over a lora link to a different country, which 99% of us don't have to. And it's fine for that
[[Tue,09:55] <welo> Even though I like reticulum as a technology, i have to admit that the best case scenario is that reticulum stays niche because that means the regular internet has stayed free enough that we don't need to migrate here.
[[Tue,10:03] <josef> @pete yes I read the zen of reticulum. I like the concept of uncentralized.
[[Tue,10:18] <Malayopython> uncentralizability* @josef
[[Tue,10:28] <josef> aah yes thanks for the correction... I didnt check back again...
[[Tue,10:32] <Malayopython> not trying to be overly exact on the matter, it's just an important distinction ;-)
[[Tue,10:37] <josef> haha its fine... I was really in to reticulum and watching Mark's presentation on ytube..
[[Tue,14:51] <B> @josef I think I saw that video! haha. It was "saveitforparts" - good channel
[[Tue,14:52] <B> The one of him running meshtastic on it
[[Tue,16:40] <Tost_000_PC> Yo us this chat still active?
[[Tue,16:40] <Tost_000_PC> is*
[[Tue,16:42] <Malayopython> just look at the message timestamps
[[Tue,16:56] <Quilnux> @Guest, my reasons are to get away from the Internet as much as possible. While I still use TCPClient for Reticulum, I don't consider that being on the internet. The internet is, for lack of a better way of saying it, pretty horrible these days. Misinformation, people just putting lies up for clicks and advertising $$$. I want something real, something more human. Reticulum brings that. It reminds me of growing up pre-internet (yes, I'm super old), where people talks to people over computer modems instead of talking to web sites and AI bullsh*t.
[[Tue,16:58] <Quilnux> @welo I don't know about that. I don't use the internet much anymore. I spend more time on Reticulum now. Set up a transport node in the spring and the only real Internet use I have today is emails and paying bills online (for those that I can't mail a check to). Everything else, including communicating with family members is done near exclusively over Reticulum.
[[Tue,17:16] <Malayopython> based
[[Tue,20:36] <welo> @Quilnux well fair enough, more power to you my friend
[[Tue,20:37] <welo> @Quilnux for me it's just lack of tooling rather than anything else
[[Tue,20:38] <welo> like if syncthing and qbittorrent worked over reticulum and some other stuff, I'd be happy to just casually use it
[[Tue,20:53] <Floyd> Hello from Appalachia
[[Tue,20:59] <welo> like if syncthing and qbittorrent worked over reticulum and some other stuff, I'd be happy to just casually use it
[[Tue,21:39] <Guest> @Quilnux Nice, I also grew up before the internet. How do you do group chat for family?
[[Tue,23:45] <lorenzo_vsgt> hello from Rome IT
[[Wed,00:12] <nLupo> Hey
[[Wed,03:01] <Quilnux> @Guest Well, I don't really have a reason to group chat with family. But if I was to do it over reticulum, I'd probably use RRC or something like that. RRC or something like that, running on a private IFAC. But honestly, I haven't found a reason to group with family. I didn't even do that over the internet so it's never been a problem I've had to solve before.
[[Wed,03:06] <Quilnux> @Guest Not to mention I'm a HAM radio operator as is key members of my family, and I have other communication methods I use that doesn't require internet or other infrastructure to be in place for communicating with a family that would work better for group conversations with family (either voice or text).
[[Wed,03:46] <josef> Goodmorning everybody
[[Wed,04:48] <MM> @Floyd, hello Appalachia! What a cool place!
[[Wed,05:53] <B> Hope the day is a good one for all out there.
[[Wed,08:49] <josef> Who was it that talk about torrent over reti, I found the it on github
[[Wed,08:49] <josef> https://github.com/roogle-dev/reticulum-phantom
[[Wed,10:19] <Malayopython> not sure if torrenting over reticulum is a particularly good idea privacy wise but i'd be curious to see how it performs
[[Wed,10:52] <ObscureB> @guest https://github.com/thatSFguy/reticulum-group-chat
[[Wed,10:59] <pete> @Qiuilnux: if you're a ham then you are a key person with radio skills to push and develop reticulum over RNodes (LoRa, wifi, packet radio etc). Would be great to share your skills to buildlocal reticulum networks in your area :)
[[Wed,12:14] <Guejj> Helllou
[[Wed,13:38] <Quilnux> @josef Good morning!
[[Wed,13:41] <Quilnux> @josef It says it's "torrent-like" so it's probably not full torrent but just something similar (I stated before, I don't think the torrent protocol is the best way to do p2p file sharing over Reticulum). Good find! Might be a great option for people needing to do p2p!
[[Wed,13:42] <Quilnux> @ObscureB Nice! For people that need it this will be an amazing addition to Reticulum! It's great to see a lot of applications and protocols being built around RNS.
[[Wed,13:46] <Quilnux> @pete In the US it's illegal to do so over ham frequencies. I'm familiar with how frequencies and waveforms work as well as thermal and atmopheric ducking and backscatter but none of that would be relevant to the ISM-915 bands outside of waveforms in difficult terrain and how to maximize your distance. But I don't really think I have any value beyond that honestly other then building software for RNS.
[[Wed,13:46] <Quilnux> @pete I can help people set up and configure their RNodes though...
[[Wed,13:47] <Quilnux> @Guejj Hello!
[[Wed,13:57] <josef> @Quilnux yes its a torrent-like just thinking to share it. I use also torrent the qbittorrent.
[[Wed,13:59] <josef> Its a good thing to have a torrent-like or equal on the reti.
[[Wed,14:04] <Quilnux> @josef Definitely. I don't use torrent anymore (haven't for about 10 years now) but I think anything that brings capabilities from the internet over to Reticulum is always going to be good. I'd still like to see something like an FTP server (without needing nomad) for people to access. I'm sure some people just use rngit but I'd like to get a real FTP server functioning. It's probably not hard to do I just don't have to time to build it (plus I'd have to build a RNS framework for the C language first. I don't know anything about python code other then being able to read it.
[[Wed,14:07] <josef> @Quilnux I use the meshchatX in the tools there is filesharing with remoting and permision but its in alpha stage.
[[Wed,14:08] <josef> I didnt try it yet..
[[Wed,14:08] <Quilnux> Somewhat off topic, we really need a MUD server for reticulum...
[[Wed,14:11] <Quilnux> @josef You must have a different version of MeshChatX then I do because I don't see it (I don't update all the time like others probably do). Not sure if file sharing is the same though as an FTP servers. I'll depend on it's implementation. I noticed filesync is in development though. someone was talking about that in this room that I had responded to. So they might have filesync capability soon.
[[Wed,14:13] <Quilnux> I don't tend to use stuff that syncs files between machines though because I have 1 desktop and 2 laptops and I don't want to laptops to have the same files as my desktop in case they get stolen. So I don't generally use those things. I just selfhost Nextcloud locally and use that over a selfhosted VPN.
[[Wed,14:23] <josef> I see.. I do filetransfer once in a month. I was looking forward for options. incase something is going to happen.
[[Wed,14:30] <Quilnux> @josef Reticulum just grows more and more each month. New capabilities are always welcome.
[[Wed,14:31] <Quilnux> I gotta head out. I just got a brand new Tesla (first I've ever owned) and it's got so many features I need to sit in it and just start touching buttons on the screen to see what everything is (it's overwhelming not gonna lie). Have a great rest of your morning/afternoon/evening!
[[Wed,14:31] <ObscureB> @Quilnux I've seen two MUD servers on nomadnet so far
[[Wed,14:32] <ObscureB> 96e3fe9f897cbe5dfcbd9400e2e41515:/page/index.mu
[[Wed,14:34] <ObscureB> I think this is the other one. Though I haven't seen it in a while. 80bccbb9324a2dc5bf7ecc262ac85daf
[[Wed,14:36] <Quilnux> @ObscureB Thanks for sharing! I'd prefer a non-nomad version, this will do for now. Thanks for sharing! Great find!
[[Wed,14:36] <Quilnux> See you all later!
[[Wed,17:53] <welo> the reticulum phantom implementation is kinda ass frankly
[[Wed,17:53] <welo> it's just non standard and not really built for reticulum either so it's the worst of both worlds
[[Wed,17:54] <welo> I've been looking into adding reticulum support into qBittorrent directly and I've half written up a spec for that, I'm just ass at c++, so if I were to do it, it might take me a month.
[[Wed,18:02] <welo> hardest part of porting is having an alternative thing in place of trackers.
[[Wed,19:07] <welo> okay I looked at the libtorrent thing (library that qbittorrent uses) and bro I am so fucking lost, I have not touched C++ in a very long time and it shows.
[[Wed,19:09] <welo> okay I'm gonna go find a go or rust version of a bittorrent client and take a look instead because those are the two languages I'm not braindead at
[[Wed,19:10] <welo> would rather just port qBittorrent directly, but a proof of concept is fine.
[[Wed,19:11] <welo> someone who is smarter than me can do that if I happen to be onto something
[[Wed,19:16] <welo> microReticulum (reticulm's c++ impl) seems pretty good from the people I've heard talk about it. So I reckon it is actually doable
[[Wed,20:45] <cykros> Greetings folks. feeling late to the reticulum party but fips wants to insist on systemd and this is feeling more accessible so figure i'll learn my way around here first
[[Wed,20:52] <cykros> curious if there's more available than I've run across on Android. Seems like Sideband is good basic stuff but NomadNet and other terminal stuff is basically unusable on a touch screen on a phone without a keyboard.
[[Wed,21:16] <Guest> hi people
[[Wed,21:20] <Meteo> Meteo Request from Guest: Weather in moscow: 14.9C, Overcast
[[Wed,21:20] <System> Guest has joined The Chat Room!
[[Wed,21:21] <System> Guest is Laughing Out Loud! LOL! :D
[[Wed,21:21] <System> Guest is away.
[[Wed,21:21] <Guest> good night anybody
[[Thu,00:21] <josef> @cykros sideband is very basic.. there are other apps for the phone
[[Thu,00:22] <josef> like meshchat,meshchatx, columba or ratspeak.
[[Thu,02:06] <Quilnux> @welo It's been suggested by Mark Qvist that it's likely harder (in most cases) to port to Reticulum vs building apps from the ground up. I believe torrent will be one of those cases were a completely new application vs porting because the torrent standard heavily relies on IP to be present and wasn't really designed or implemented for cases without IP. IP is basically the foundation of torrent. If you look at how trackers are implemented (for example, which I think you've realized since you mentioned it), it cannot be used with anything that is not an IP-based network. And a re-write of the specification for trackers would require a complete re-engineering of the torrent protocol and standard. So it wouldn't be compatible with the normal torrent system used on the internet today.
[[Thu,02:09] <Quilnux> @welo The better option would be to throw away torrent and build a torrent-like standard instead, and make it purpose built for Reticulum. It won't be torrent but if the output (end result) is identical, it doesn't matter if it's torrent or not.
[[Thu,02:22] <Quilnux> Have a great night everyone!
