It’s been a long while now that I’ve been here, isolated, at this remote communications outpost. I can no longer remember when I left Earth, bound for the SOL system and the new home they call Lagrange L73. Every message I send is encrypted, using an obsolete cryptographic technology known as the KG-84.
The KG-84 is an electronic encryption device used to secure the transmission of digital data across a range of networks: landline phones, satellites, microwave links, and Telex lines. Although most military KG-84 units have been replaced by equipment such as the KIV-7, or further replaced by modern IP-Crypto devices, I managed — before leaving Earth — to bring along the unit that had been used by my special operations platoon: the WBKNL.
I send this first message in the hope of being read by my comrades, so that we may yet communicate across this SOL system, so distant and so desolate.
