An imageboard is a type of forum based off the Japanese imageboard Futaba Channel (2chan), with a focus of sharing images. The first popular english imageboard, 4chan, was created by moot in 2003, a Something Awful user from the ADTRW (Anime Death Tentacle Rape Whorehouse) board. It was originally only intended to be an email address but then the first board /b/ - Anime/Random was created.

The first users were from Something Awful and the Raspberry Heaven IRC where moot announced the creation of 4chan. Most early posters would namefag as the importance of anonymity had not been discovered yet. That is until Shii wrote his famous writeup about anonymity, causing moot to force anonymity on /b/. It then became an unspoken rule to be Anonymous across all boards.

There was an English textboard before 4chan called world2ch but it was not as popular as 4chan due to it being run by a Japanese person RIR7, who couldn't communicate well in English. And also the free porn on 4chan. Shii used to use world2ch under the name menchi and he also used to be a Something Awful user.

Ever since its creation, 4chan has created the lulziest of memes without caring a single bit about morals. To do otherwise would be treating the internet as serious business. This has resulted in the creation of win in the form of timeless memes and raids.

These flash animations by ZONE-SAMA best represents chan culture and the anarchic atmosphere of the website.

Anonymous

Anonymous is a collective hivemind of chaos, spanning across the entire internets. This creature only cares about >teh lulz at the expense of humanity. Originally, Anonymous was represented by a green person in a suit, now called Green Anon. However, what normalfags and the mass media see is the Anonymous hacktivist group that was born out of the Project Chanology Scientology protests.

This new Anonymous was subject to !fail. Instead of trolling for a laugh, they weaponize this trolling for serious and political causes. This disillusions oldfags who see this new wave of users coming in after Project Chanology trying to raid for their own personal reasons instead of >teh lulz as moralfaggotry. A new phrase was created as a reaction to this: /b/ is not your personal army.

Additionally, newfags were regularly told to lurk moar, which isn't anything new. Every since the 90s in IRC channels and BBSes, lurking was encouraged to get up to speed with the culture and mannerisms of the place. This has become even more important on 4chan with the anonymity principle. If you are an unprepared newfag, without any knowledge of chan culture, you are going to stand out when posting. The goal is to blend in with Anonymous as much as possible to conceal anything about your identity.

Japanese Internet Culture

Japanese internet culture had a strong influence at the beginning of 4chan, with memes like Waha from 2chan and Pedobear from 2channel (2ch) being posted on 4chan. The opposite would also happen with memes from 4chan such as Caramelldansen (also known as ウッーウッーウマウマ(゚∀゚)) making its way onto the Japanese video sharing site NicoNicoDouga and becoming a popular meme in both Japan and the West.

Since 4chan was mainly focused on anime, otaku culture had made its way onto it, popularizing niche otaku interests like Touhou Project and Rozen Maiden.
