The Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what caused a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) special agent to shoot and kill a man on Thursday morning after a brief fight in traffic near Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School.

The shooting appeared to happen close to the first bell just after 9 a.m. Thursday in the school’s drop-off line near the intersection of Southwest 157th Avenue and 140th Street, only a few hundred feet away from where the middle schoolers would have been walking to class. The school, south of Miami Executive Airport in southwest Miami, went on lockdown after the shooting, but the only other reported injury was to the FDLE agent, a department spokesperson told New Times in a statement.

According to a statement from FDLE, the altercation started when a motorist exited his vehicle, approached the agent’s vehicle, and struck the window.

“When the agent exited the vehicle, a physical altercation immediately followed,” the spokesperson said. “During the altercation, the agent discharged his firearm, striking the individual.”

Police officers were reportedly in the area and responded quickly to attempt life-saving measures on the man, but later pronounced him dead on scene. The agent went to a local hospital for minor injuries, according to FDLE. The agent is now on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.

In a video circulating on social media and posted by WPLG Local 10, a man in a tan shirt appears to chase a man in a red shirt (who appears to be holding a gun). The man in the tan shirt catches him, grabs him around the waist, and body-slams him onto the street. The man in the tan shirt can then be heard repeatedly yelling, “Help! Help! Help! He’s got a gun,” multiple times before the camera pans down and a shot is heard.

“This is an active investigation by MDSO and FDLE will not be providing additional comment,” the spokesperson said in the statement. “FDLE takes all use of force matters very seriously and will conduct its own thorough administrative review following the criminal investigation.”

MDSO deputies are investigating the shooting, an FDLE spokesperson told New Times in a statement. MDSO hasn’t returned New Times calls or emails requesting comment. It wasn’t immediately clear whether authorities would file charges against anyone in the incident.
