Radical Democracy
Sortition
For centuries, sortition was considered the norm for democratic institutions from Greece to South America, with electoralism being considered non-democratic. Sorition avoids much of the problems inherent in electoralism. The main ones being avoiding politics turning into shallow popularity contests, and avoiding a specific personality type taking over an entrenched political class. A kind of modern aristocracy very visible in places like the USA. Sortition, on the other hand, gives committees, boards and congresses a true representative quality in the statistical sense of the word, not the shallow and prone to manipulation sense of electoralism. You're literally taking a random sample from the polity.
Worker or locally owned co-ops
Institutions that practice or aspire to the organising principle of one-person=one-share=one-vote
Community Councils
Communities being able to directly control their own "commons". This most practically means roads and local parks controlled through community councils.
Residential communities being allowed to close or modify their roads as they see fit, subject to their being an available alternate route for thoroughfare. This usually means any roads above 50 kmph are not subject to community control.
Decentralised Communication and Collaboration
Reticulum and Meshtastic
These protocols represent the closest thing to a true public square in the digital age. Extremely resistant to platform capture and enclosure.
By simply setting up your own node in your own house you are effectively growing the public square.
Community Controlled Currency
One of the biggest obstacles to creating a democratic economy is that it's fighting against a monetary system that is inherently
adversarial. Worker owned co-ops etc are completely misaligned with current approaches to funding and investment. Community Controlled Currency is therefore a foundational pillar for any kind of progress here. It allows communities to create their own
exchange systems free from the manipulation and control of central or private banks.
Mutual Credit Systems
This is the simple act of stores or localised markets creating credit for the users of that market. The downside is it requires someone to take up the task of tracking who owes who what. This can work on small scales where trust is possible. For situations that do not allow this, blockchain is appropriate.
Blockchain
Put aside the speculative aspect of a lot of cryptocurrency for the moment. The fundamental technology of blockchain, a way to trustlessly guarantee
consensus through a public ledger, has a lot of promise here. In practice, blockchain based currencies are already creating real parallel economies, like G1 currency. G1 is a co-currency with no speculative aspect that tackles inequality by placing the money creation mechanism in the hands of the community. It is used in many functional economies in europe, and originates from France. It is already the bases of a thriving real world economy. Similarly, Sarafu Network, another open source blockchain system focused on CCC, had its origin in Kenya, and is actively allowing communities to build their own circular economies.
Agriculture
Agroforestry
What can we learn from indigenous farming techniques? Quite a lot. Agroforestry is an ancient practice of managing a forest to produce food for you. It relies on high levels of biodiversity and synergy between species to reduce conventional energy inputs required in industrial agriculture like fertilisers and irrigation.
Community Supported Agriculture
customers are both the investors and consumers. You pay for a season up front. This acts as an investment for the farmer to then get all that food growing. Then you get what you paid for at the end.
CSA built around community controlled currency is the end goal.
