Henri Bergson

Henri Bergson (1859–1941) was a French philosopher whose influential ideas on time, consciousness, memory, and creativity helped shape twentieth-century philosophy and literature. Best known for works such as Time and Free Will, Matter and Memory, Creative Evolution, and The Two Sources of Morality and Religion, he argued that intuition complements rational analysis in understanding the dynamic nature of reality. His concepts of duration (durée) and the élan vital profoundly influenced thinkers and writers including Marcel Proust, William James, and Gilles Deleuze. Bergson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1927 in recognition of his rich and vital philosophical ideas and the brilliance with which they were presented.
