Romain Rolland (1866–1944) was a French novelist, dramatist, essayist, and biographer whose writings championed humanism, pacifism, and the moral power of art. Best known for his monumental novel cycle Jean-Christophe, he also wrote acclaimed biographies of Beethoven, Michelangelo, Tolstoy, and Gandhi, as well as the anti-war novels Clérambault and Pierre and Luce. A lifelong advocate of peace and international understanding, Rolland was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1915 for the lofty idealism of his literary work and his profound sympathy for humanity.
